Search Engine Optimization 101 - Section 1 - Getting started

The history of Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization or SEO is not a new process. It has actually been around for as long as search engines have been around. Th reason it has gained popularity in recent years is tw-fold. First Search engines like Google and Yahoo have become some of the largest internet entities in the world. From a marketing standpoint that is huge news.

Search engines now process somewhere around 4.5 billion search queries a month. With that in mind it is easy to see why people are clamoring to reach the top of the ranks for keywords in their industry. With the posibility of getting thousands of website hits a day for free from the search engines.

So how exactly do you optimize a website?

What I would like to do in SEO 101 is go over some basic techniques to get you started. In SEO 202 and 303 we will go into some more advanced techniques for optimizing your site. For starters let's talk about some basic ways to get your site started down the path of the properly optimized.

There are two main ways to get your site optimized. One is the good old fashioned coding way. This part of the process is broken down into several different steps.

  • Optimizing your keywords
  • Optimizing your code
  • Cleaning your code

Optimizing your keywords

Optimizing your keywords is the process of making the most out of the words that your potential clients will be typing in to find your site. To do this you need to first figure out what words your prospective web surfers will be using. There are many different ways of doing this.

One of the easiest ways to start this process is to simply think about the words that are commonly used in your industry. If you are a car salesman then it would be obvious to start with cars and car industry terms. For instance, maybe you sell Cadillacs. I would start with every key Cadillac term and make a list of Cadillac terms. Whichever ones are most popular are the ones we will use first. For your home page it is a good idea to stick with about ten key terms.

The object is to take the top ten terms in your industry or niche and use them on your home page. For the home page we need to use the top ten keywords so that we can get the most amount of traffic to your main page. From there we can use another sort of subset of keywords for the other pages. For the other pages on your site you will want to take each one of the main keywords that you used on your main page and use one for each page. Of course you will think of that keyword and build a list of ten more that branch off of that one. The object of this process is to build a tree of terms with the roots of the tree being the most popular and used search terms for your industry. The main branches are are secondary keywords or industry terms. The smaller branchers are even further refined and tweaked keywords based on their branches.

Using this method ensures that you first get a broad range of traffic to your site and then you entice them to your more specific pages. Also the search engines will look at your sub pages and their more specific keywords and possibly get you traffic to those pages based on the sub keywords or phrases that you picked for those pages.

Now that we know what we are doing in picking the keywords. How do we make these keywords work their magic for us.
