Picking MY site Name (URL)?Your Web AddressPicking your web address can seem like an overwhelming task, but it is it? So you have the best business in your industry. You know your product and you want to tell the world all about it. You know you that you need to get into the interent frenzy or you just won't make it. So what do you do? You start looking for that elusive perfect website address. Not knowing where to start you use your business name. Well that wasn't too hard. You are now the proud owner of Okay, so this is not your exact address, but you get my point. Using your business name can often be difficult. Most businesses aren't as easy as target.com or wal-mart.com. Both of those are easy because they have short recognizable names. Most businesses use some kind of adjective in the name. Yes, I said adjective. Today's word is adjective. So what is an adjective? From my limited amount of unrepressed childhood memories, I remember it to be a word that describes something else. While the wal-marts and Targets of the world get away with single words, the average business owner just does not have that choice. Your average business owner is well aware of the fact that he or she must use some kind of adjective or several to describe the nature of their business. Otherwise their possible clients will have no idea what they do. What may surprise you about this fact is that this is exactly how SEO work began. What is SEO? It is the optimization of your website. But what is it really? Well, a big part of it is the process of saturating your pages with specific keywords or adjectives that describe your business or website. Okay, so were almost off track here. What does any of this have do with picking my websites URL? Think back to what we said earlier. Using your business name can be difficult. As we discovered it can be too long of a name, making it unproductive and hard to remember. The best rule of thumb is still the oldest; keep it simple stupid. We all remember the phrase because it is generally always true. Keeping it simple does need a bit of explanation though just for clarity's sake. How do we keep it simple. We pick the top two words that describe our business, website, or services. Instaed of using all of the words that may be describing your industry in your company name, just pick two. If, like in the case of "James Jones landscaping and tree trimming services" you have an extra long business name, try narrowing it first to Jones (name) Landscaping(service). This gives a name with an adjective; JonesLandscaping. Well, we've shortened the name let's see if we can go buy it. That's just great! JonesLandscaping.com .net .info and .org are all sold and on backorder the next 400 years. So what do we do now? Let's try this. Let's try Jones-Landscaping.com. Notice that we put a dash between the words. That is often all it takes. As simple as it sounds you would shocked to know all of the names I have found this way. For instance, the other day I bought: So maybe I just got lucky. If you do not get lucky in your hunting like I did, try adding one more descriptive adjective to the end of your word combination. Try something like: Well my friend we've reached the end of our journey for today. Tomorrow I'm going to go ahead and elaborate on this just a little bit more. There are a few other tips I don't want you to miss out on here. Thanks and good hunting |
